Depression manifests itself through a variety of symptoms, including feelings of sadness, despair and hopelessness, losing interest in activities or hobbies you once enjoyed and an increased level of fatigue and drowsiness. Many times, it is not possible to overcome depression on your own, and your doctor may prescribe medication to help you conquer your illness. Wellbutrin XL is one such medication designed for helping you cope with, and overcome, depression. Available in both 150-mg and 300-mg dosage strengths, you consume Wellbutrin XL via a daily pill. Once ingested, this pill releases the chemical bupropion throughout your body, counteracting the effects of depression. Wellbutrin XL does not work immediately; the medication requires anywhere from two to four weeks before you start to feel the effects. Once you eliminate your depression, many doctors still recommend you take Wellbutrin XL to help reduce further episodes of depression.

What are the side effects of Wellbutrin XL?

Like any medication, Wellbutrin XL has several side effects; knowing what these side effects are is important before taking the drug. The most dangerous side effect in Wellbutrin XL is the chance of having a seizure while using the medication. To help reduce the risk of having a seizure while on Wellbutrin XL, make sure to disclose all other medications to your doctor before first taking the pill. If possible, do not use any other medication while using Wellbutrin XL.

Most medicine designed to treat depression can result in sexual side effects; while this is also possible with Wellbutrin XL, the risk of these side effects occurring is extremely low. However, it is still possible to encounter a decrease in your sexual drive and difficulty finding enjoyment during sexual intercourse while taking Wellbutrin XL. Unlike other depression medications, Wellbutrin XL does not put you at risk for weight gain as a result of taking it.

These are not the only side effects that occur with Wellbutrin XL; other side effects include: dry mouth, nausea, weight loss, difficulty sleeping, sore throat, dizziness, sweating, frequent urination and skin rash. While these side effects are common, consult your doctor if they are interfering with your day-to-day life.

What dose should I take Wellbutrin XL in?

The dosage of Wellbutrin XL you take generally depends on your doctor. Most patients begin with one 150-mg pill a day; however, it is not uncommon for a doctor to prescribe one 300-mg pill a day depending on the severity of your depression. Never exceed more than 450-mg of Wellbutrin XL in a single 24 hour period and never exceed your recommended dosage.

When should I take Wellbutrin XL?

Doctors recommend that you take Wellbutrin XL once per day at the same time every day. The exact time of day is dependent on the recommendations of your doctor and will change with every patient. If you miss a dosage of Wellbutrin XL, do not attempt to take an extra dose of Wellbutrin XL during your next scheduled dosage; take only your recommended dose as normal at the next dosage period. Attempting to take extra doses of Wellbutrin XL puts you at increased risk of side effects.

How should I take Wellbutrin XL?

You can take Wellbutrin XL tablets two different ways: swallowing them whole with or without food. Do not cut, chew or otherwise alter your Wellbutrin XL tablet; if you are having difficulty swallowing the tablet whole, speak to your doctor about a replacement. Altering the pill in any way could increase the risk of side effects or otherwise cause the medication to function improperly.
