Even though it is critical to be honest with your doctor about your health and health behaviors, many Americans don't inform their medical providers of their complete health profile. From how often they exercise to subtle aches and pains, some of this lack of information may not amount to anything, but there are some important things you need to tell your doctor. Not doing so could result in harm to your health.

Here are five things you need to tell your doctor.

  1. Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking, even if they did not prescribe them to you.
  2. Inform your doctor of all the supplements you are taking, including vitamins, minerals and any natural or herbal remedies. Many supplements can interact with prescription medications or with existing health conditions. Therefore come with a complete a list of every kind of pill, tablet, capsule and tincture you are taking and present this list to your doctor on your next visit.
  3. Inform your doctor if you experience any unusual side effects following taking your medication. While side effects are a consequent of many medications, extreme side effects should always be promptly articulated to your doctor.
  4. Be honest with your doctor about how much alcohol you drink on a regular basis. While drinking some kinds of alcohol in moderation has been shown to be protective against certain diseases, it is important to let your doctor know how much you drink, how often and what kind of alcohol you typically consume.
  5. Tell your doctor about any changes in your health. If you have been experiencing occasional heart burn, digestive issues or increased thirst, keep a list of all of your symptoms and share them with your physician on your next visit.

These small but important steps will not only enhance your relationship with your medical provider, but it will also keep you and your doctor in better control of your health.
