Staying Healthy On Vacation
Last Edited: April 12th, 2012

Spending time away from the hustle and bustle of your usual routine is a restorative and important part of a healthy life. But sometimes when we go away on vacation, our day-to-day health routines take a backseat. For instance, we may eat a bit more, drink more and forgo the gym for an afternoon at the beach or by the pool. While all of these minor interruptions in our daily routine are unlikely to cause any serious long-term health consequences, interrupting your medication routine while on vacation can.

So how do you adhere to your usual medication schedule when you are away? One way to keep with the same schedule is to not interrupt it: If you are used to taking your medication right before you sit down for breakfast while you are at home, you must do the same action while on vacation. Even though your sleeping and eating habits may be different while you are away, maintaining the same rhythm of how and when you take your daily prescriptions should not change. Just one missed dose can cause problems in your health.

Another important action to take while on vacation is to always keep a list of all the medications you are taking including their dosage and the phone number of your medical doctor. In the event of an emergency, this list may save your life. It is also a good idea to keep this list with you at all times rather than back in your luggage in the hotel room.

Taking just a few simple steps can ensure that you have a healthy, restorative and fun vacation.
